'Baby Graves' Cemetery by laurynnelizabeth 'Baby Graves' Cemetery by laurynnelizabeth
I wish I could find more information about this place known as the "baby graves". It's a tiny cemetery located miles in the middle of nowhere off of a gravel road in southeastern Washington state (just outside Benton City). It apparently made the list of 'haunted places in Washington state' and consists mostly of infants who died in the late 1800's due to a flu epidemic that killed hundreds of children. There have been numerous stories of 'weird' experiences out there, and some people even claim to have seen ghosts at night. I don't know how true the stories are, but I can definitely say that it was extremely creepy, even in the middle of the day.

Within the cemetery is a white picket fence, and inside it lie two brothers - William and Mark Peterson. William was born on July 4, 1901 and died only 6 days later on July 10th, and Mark was born on June 30, 1902, and died in November of 1903. This picture is of the back of their tombstone inside the fence (for some reason it's facing outward) and there were two stuffed teddy bears, though only one is visible in this picture.

This picture is outstanding, looking at it sends chills up my spine. I love how the fence is in clear view as if your acctually there looking over the fence to see these a poor teddy bear awaiting an owner.

I do have a suggestion though, maybe you should clear up the teddy bear too so that it really hits home to the viewer that these children are no longer alive.

I really like how you can see the gravestone in the picture but that it takes you a second to realize this is their grave. I also like the fence in this picture, Ii know you couldn't help that but it adds to the deserted effect which I like.

If I were a photographer I would use this picture for inspiration. Very well done.

What Road is Cemetary Rd off of? Mapqwest and Garman GPS have no record of a "Cemetary Rd" near Benton City. Sure would appreciate the help in finding Baby Graves!

Thanks!

I've been out to this "haunted place" and trust me, it's something to see. I've never experienced anything out there, nor have I seen anything unusual until two nights ago. I took four friends up there and we could barely get five feet into the grave yard without having to turn around. We thought we saw a reflector or candle and so we decided it wasn't the right time to be up there. We left, but then I went back up yesterday to go search for the reflector or candle and it was gone. Not only that, but I know somebody had been up there after us, probably taking care of the grounds because the night we went up the weeds were up to our knees. The next day, they were cut down. Also, when we were up there at night the fence was left open, and then yesterday the fence was closed.

And your picture is definitely of the two brothers grave stones, but that bear is no longer there. When I went up a few weeks ago it was torn to shreds and in it's place was a coyote stuffed animal. And this last time when I went up a new brown bear replaced it and flowers.

About the other graves, there are only about 5 more, and two (which are buried in the same place with the same gravestone) are babies. I have pictures of each stone and of the fence, if you'd like to see them. You can tell by the pictures that it is in a semi-remote area. I also know how to get out there if you'd like directions to see for yourself.

Now there is a legend that a farmer who lives out there, and is also the groundskeeper, shoots or chases you off the property. I have never seen him, nor have I heard him. But there is a story that a girl went up there to find the baby graves, got lost, and happened to find him while she was driving. He chased her off the road, and she died. The police did not do anything about it because the girl was technically trespassing, although there are no signs that say "No trespassing."

I believe that these graves may be something special, but may not be. They are unique because of their location, but that's what farmers did way back then. They didn't have the time, or money to drive into town and have their family buried there. I know on the east side of the country you can find plenty of these, some of which are more unusual.

I hope this helps with whatever you're doing.

omg I have seen what I thought was a blue reflector as well! when I went to see what it was it turned out nothing was there... not even a fence which is what I thought this reflector was on. I just got way freaked out when I read what you had to say about your experience. When I saw this "reflector" it was 2 years ago. I want to go back at some point

I live 10 miles away. I give my respects every time I decide to go there. I leave a doll in a different grave at least ones a week, and the next time I'm there, they aren't there.
